I) Warm-up

α. αὐτὸς εἶπεν αὐτῇ

--- he said to her

β. ὑπὲρ αὐτῆς

--- in behalf of her

γ. ὁ διδάσκαλος αὐτῶν ἐστιν μαθητὴς αὐτοῦ.

--- Their teacher is his disciple.

δ. αὐτοὶ γάρ εἰσιν οἱ πόδες ὑμῶν.

--- For they themselves are your feet.

ε. ἡ αὐτὴ σάρξ

--- the same flesh

ζ. αὐτὸς ὁ ὀφθαλμός ἐστιν καλός.

--- The eye itself  is good.

η. πιστεὺω (I believe) τὸ αὐτό.

--- I believe the same (thing).

 

II) Translation

1. φέρετε (Bring!) αὐτὸν πρός με. καὶ ἤνεγκαν (they brought) αὐτὸν πρὸς αὐτόν.

--- Bring! him to me. And they brought him to him.

2. πάλιν οὖν αὐτοῖς ἐλάλησεν (he/she/it spoke) ὁ Ἰησοῦς λέγων (saying)· ἐγώ εἰμι τὸ φῶς τοῦ κόσμου.

--- Then the Jesus spoke to them again, saying: “I myself am the light of the world.”

3. ὁ δὲ παρήγγειλεν (he/she/it commanded) αὐτοῖς μηδενὶ εἰπεῖν (to speak).

--- But he commanded them to speak to no-one.

4. προσηύξαντο (they prayed) περὶ αὐτῶν ὅπως λάβωσιν (they might receive) πνεῦμα ἅγιον.

--- They prayed for them so that they might receive holy spirit.

5. Ἰησοῦς αὐτὸς οὐκ ἐβάπτιζεν (he/she/it was baptizing) ἀλλ᾽ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ.

--- Jesus himself was not baptizing but his disciples (were baptizing).

6. πιστεύετέ (Believe!) μοι ὅτι ἐγὼ ἐν τῷ πατρὶ καὶ ὁ πατὴρ ἐν ἐμοί· εἰ δὲ μή, διὰ τὰ ἔργα αὐτὰ πιστεύετε.

--- Believe! me because I (am) in the father and the father (is) in me; But if not, believe! because of the works themselves.

7. Παρακαλῶ (I urge) δὲ ὑμᾶς, ἀδελφοί, διὰ τοῦ ὀνόματος τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, ἳνα τὸ αὐτὸ λέγητε (you say) πάντες.

--- But I urge you, brothers, through the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ, that you all say the same (thing).

8. πορευθέντες (having gone) οὖν μαθητεύσατε (make disciples of!) πάντα τὰ ἔθνη (nations), βαπτίζοντες (baptizing) αὐτοὺς εἰς τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ πατρὸς καὶ τοῦ υἱοῦ καὶ τοῦ ἁγίου πνεύματος, διδάσκοντες (teaching)αὐτοὺς τηρεῖν (to keep) πάντα ὅσα ἐνετειλάμην (I have commanded) ὑμῖν· καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ μεθ᾽ ὑμῶν εἰμι πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας ἕως τῆς συντελείας (end) τοῦ αἰῶνος.

--- Therefore having gone make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the father and the son and the holy spirit, teaching them to keep all which I have commanded you; and look I am with you all the days until the end of the world.

9. ἐπάραντες (raising up) δὲ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτῶν οὐδένα εἶδον (they saw) εἰ μὴ αὐτὸν Ἰησοῦν μόνον.

--- But raising up their eyes they saw no-one except Jesus himself alone.

10. 9 ἀδελφοί μου, χαίρετε (rejoice!) ἐν κυρίῳ. τὰ αὐτὰ γράφειν (to write) ὑμῖν ἐμοὶ μὲν οὐκ ὀκνηρόν (troublesome).

--- My brother, rejoice! in Lord. To write the same (things) to you, to me indeed, is not troublesome.

 

III) Additional

11. ὁ δὲ μαθητὴς οὐκ ἐστὶν ὑπὲρ τὸν κύριον αὐτοῦ, οὗτος γὰρ ὁ πρῶτος τῶν πάντων.

--- But the disciple is not above his Lord, for this(man) is the first of all.

12. πάλιν δὲ ὁ Ιησοῦς ἀπεκρίθη· οἱ πιστοὶ αὐτοὶ εἰσελεύσονται (they will enter) εἰς τὴν αὐτὴν ζωήν.

--- But the Jesus answered again: “The faithful/believing ones themselves will enter into the same life.”

13. καὶ ἔδωκεν (he/she/it gave) τὸν καρπὸν αὐτοῦ10 καὶ τῷ ἀνδρὶ αὐτῆς μετ᾽ αὐτῆς.

--- And she gave its fruit also to her husband with her.

14. σὺ οὖν ἐπιγνοὺς (recognizing) τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ ἀπόστα (stay away!) ἀπ᾽ αὐτοῦ καὶ μηδὲν αὐτῷ πίστευε (believe!), ὅτι τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ πονηρά εἰσι καὶ ἀσύμφορα(harmful) τοῖς δούλοις τοῦ θεοῦ.

--- Therefore recognizing his works you yourself stay away! from him and believe! nothing from him, because his works are evil and harmful to the servants of the God.

15. καὶ ηὐλόγησεν (he/she/it blessed) ὁ θεὸς τὸν Νῶε καὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· αὐξάνεσθε (be fruitful!).

--- And the God blessed the Noah and his sons and said to them: “Be fruitful!.”

16. [εἰ ὁ θεὸς ἐδοξάσθη (is glorified) ἐν αὐτῷ] καὶ ὁ θεὸς δοξάσει (he/she/it will glorify) αὐτὸν ἐν αὐτῷ, καὶ εὐθὺς δοξάσει αὐτόν.

--- If the God is glorified in him and the God will glorify him in him, and immediately he will glorify him.

17. αὐτὸς δὲ Ἰησοῦς οὐκ ἐπίστευεν (he/she/it entrusted) αὐτὸν αὐτοῖς.

--- But Jesus himself did not entrust him to them.

18. Διαιρέσεις (varieties) δὲ χαρισμάτων εἰσίν, τὸ δὲ αὐτὸ πνεῦμα· καὶ διαιρέσεις διακονιῶν εἰσιν, καὶ ὁ αὐτὸς κύριος· καὶ διαιρέσεις ἐνεργημάτων εἰσίν, ὁ δὲ αὐτὸς θεός ὁ ἐνεργῶν (one who works) τὰ πάντα ἐν πᾶσιν.

--- But there are varieties of gifts, but the same spirit; and there are varieties of services, and the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but the same God who works the all (things) in all (men).

19. τὰ αὐτὰ γὰρ ἐποίουν (they were doing) τοῖς προφήταις οἱ πατέρες αὐτῶν.

--- For their fathers were doing the same (things) to the prophets.

20. καὶ κύριον αὐτὸν καὶ Χριστὸν ἐποίησεν (he/she/it made) ὁ θεός.

--- The God made him both Lord and Christ.
