I) Warm-up

α. ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου τούτου

--- out of this world

β. Ἐν δὲ ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις

--- but in those days

γ. πῶς ἐστιν τοῦτο;

--- how is this?

δ. Πάτερ ἡμῶν

--- our Father

ε. καὶ ἐκείνοις εἶπεν

--- and that (man) said

ζ. οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ υἱός μου.

--- This is my son.

η. ἐν τῇ πόλει ταύτῃ

--- in this city

 

II) Translation

1. ταύτην τὴν ἐντολὴν ἔλαβον (I received) παρὰ τοῦ πατρός μου.

--- I received this commandment from my father.

2. αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ μεγάλη καὶ πρώτη ἐντολή.

--- This is the greatest and first commandment.

3. εἰ ταῦτα οἴδατε (you know), μακάριοί ἐστε ἐὰν ποιῆτε (you do) αὐτά.

--- If you know these (things), you are blessed if you do them.

4. Ἐκ δὲ τῆς πόλεως ἐκείνης πολλοὶ ἐπίστευσαν (they believed) εἰς αὐτὸν τῶν Σαμαριτῶν διὰ τὸν λόγον τῆς γυναικός.

--- But out of that city many (men) of the Samaritans believed into him because of the word of the woman.

5. διὰ τοῦτο ὑμεῖς οὐκ ἀκούετε (you hear), ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ οὐκ ἐστέ.

--- For this reason you yourselves do not hear, because you are not from the God.

6. οὗτος ἦλθεν (he/she/it came) … ἳνα μαρτυρήσῃ (he/she/it might bear witness) περὶ τοῦ φωτός, ἳνα πάντες πιστεύσωσιν (they might believe) δι᾽ αὐτοῦ. οὐκ ἦν ἐκεῖνος[NSM] τὸ φῶς[NSN], αλλ᾽ ἳνα μαρτυρήσῃ περὶ τοῦ φωτός.

--- This (man) came … in order that he might bear witness concerning the light, in order that all (men) might believe through him. That (man) is not the light, but in order that he might bear witness concerning the light.

7. λέγει (he/she/it says) πρὸς αὐτὸν ἡ γυνή· κύριε, δός (give!) μοι τοῦτο τὸ ὕδωρ.

--- The woman says to him: “Lord! Give! to me this water.”

8. καὶ πᾶς ὁ ἔχων τὴν ἐλπίδα ταύτην ἐπ᾽ αὐτῷ ἁγνίζει (he/she/it purifies) ἑαυτόν, καθὼς ἐκεῖνος ἁγνός (pure) ἐστιν.

--- And everyone who has this hope on the basis of him purifies himself, just as that (man) is pure.

9. ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιεῖς (you do); ἢ τίς σοι ἔδωκεν (he/she/it gave) τὴν ἐξουσίαν ταύτην ἳνα ταῦτα ποιῇς (you might do);

--- In/by what authority you do these (things)? Or who  gave to you this authority in order that you might do these (things)?

10. Νῦν ἡ ψυχή (soul) μου τετάρακται (he/she/it is troubled), καὶ τί εἴπω; πάτερ, σῶσόν (save!) με ἐκ τῆς ὥρας ταύτης; ἀλλὰ διὰ τοῦτο ἦλθον (I came) εἰς τὴν ὥραν ταύτην. πάτερ, δόξασόν (glorify!) σου τὸ ὄνομα. ἦλθεν (he/she/it came) οὖν φωνὴ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ· καὶ ἐδόξασα (I glorified) καὶ πάλιν δοξάσω (I will glorify).… ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν· οὐ δι᾽ ἐμὲ ἡ φωνὴ αὕτη γέγονεν (he/she/it came) ἀλλὰ δι᾽ ὑμᾶς.

--- ‘Now my soul is troubled, and what can I say? 
"Father!, save! me from this hour?"
-- But because of this I came into/for this hour. --
"Father!, glorify! your name."  '

Then a voice came out of the heaven:
"And I glorified and I will glorify again …"

Jesus answered and said :
"This voice came not because of me but because of yo”(pl.)."

 

III) Additional

11. αἱ δὲ γυναῖκες αὗται οὐκ ἐλπίδα ἔχουσιν (they have) ὅτι αὐταῖς οὐ δικαιοσύνη ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ.

--- But these women have no hope because to them no righteousness (was given) in the name of the Jesus Christ.

12. οἱ δώδεκα μαθηταὶ οἱ μετὰ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ τοὺς πολλοὺς λόγους ἐκείνους ἤκουσαν (they heard) ἐν τῷ οἰκῷ τοῦ θεοῦ.

--- The twelve disciples, the ones who (are) with the Jesus, heard those many words in the house of the God.

13. καὶ εἶπεν Ἀδάμ· τοῦτο νῦν ὀστοῦν ἐκ τῶν ὀστέων μου καὶ σὰρξ ἐκ τῆς σαρκός μου· αὕτη κληθήσεται (he/she/it will be called) γυνή ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ ἀνδρὸς αὐτῆς ἐλήμφθη (he/she/it was taken) αὕτη.

--- And Adam said: "Now this bone (is) out of my bones and flesh out of my flesh; this (woman) will be called wife because out of her husband this (woman) was taken."

14. καὶ ἐκάλεσεν (he/she/it called) Ἀδὰμ τὸ ὄνομα τῆς γυναικὸς αὐτοῦ Ζωὴ ὅτι αὕτη μήτηρ πάντων τῶν ζώντων.

--- And Adam called the name of his wife Eve/Zoe because this (woman) (is) mother of all those who are living.

15. πολλαὶ γυναῖκες ἐκοπίησαν (they labored) διὰ τῆς χάριτος τοῦ θεοῦ αὐτῶν.

--- Many women labored through the grace of their God.

16. ζητεῖτε (Seek!) δὲ πρῶτον τὴν βασιλείαν [τοῦ θεοῦ] καὶ τὴν δικαιοσύνην αὐτοῦ, καὶ ταῦτα πάντα προστεθήσεται (he/she/it will be added) ὑμῖν.

--- But seek! first the kingdom of the God his righteousness, and all these (things) will be added to you(pl.).

17. τί ποιοῦμεν (we do) ὅτι οὗτος ὁ ἄνθρωπος πολλὰ ποιεῖ (he/she/it is doing) σημεῖα;

--- What should we do because this man is doing many signs?

18. Τῶν δὲ δώδεκα ἀποστόλων τὰ ὀνόματά ἐστιν ταῦτα.

--- But these are the names of the twelve apostles.

19. ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ γνώσεσθε (you will know) ὑμεῖς ὅτι ἐγὼ ἐν τῷ πατρί μου καὶ ὑμεῖς ἐν ἐμοὶ κἀγὼ ἐν ὑμῖν.

--- In that day you yourselves will know that I (am) in my father and you (are) in me and I (am) in you.

20. Περὶ δὲ τῆς ἡμέρας ἐκείνης ἢ τῆς ὥρας οὐδεὶς οἶδεν (he/she/it knows), οὐδὲ οἱ ἄγγελοι ἐν οὐρανῷ οὐδὲ ὁ υἱός, εἰ μή ὁ πατήρ.

--- But concerning that day or hour no one knows, neither the angels in heaven nor the son, except/but only the father.
