I) Warm-up

α. ἀκούεται[PPI-3S] ἐν ὑμῖν.
--- It is being heard in you(pl.)

β. οἱ τόποι τοῦ κακοῦ λύονται[PPI-3P].
--- The places of the evil (one) are being destroyed.

γ. ἔρχεται[PMI-3S] εἰς οἶκον.

--- He/she is involved in coming/going into a house.

 

δ. αὐτοὶ πιστεύονται[PPI-3P] ὑπὸ τῶν δαιμονίων.
--- They themselves are being believed by the demons.

ε. τίς δύναται[PMI-3S] σωθῆναι (to be saved);
--- Who is being able to be saved?

ζ. ἔρχομαι[PMI-1S] ὡς κλέπτης.
--- I am coming as a thief.

η. καὶ οὐδενὶ[DSM] οὐδὲν[ASN] ἀποκρίνεται[PMI-3S].
--- And he/she is answering nothing to no one.

 

II) Translation

1. οὐ ἀκούονται[PPI-3P] αἱ φωναὶ αὐτῶν.
---  Their voices are not being heard. 

2. οὐχ ἡ μήτηρ αὐτοῦ λέγεται[PPI-3S] Μαριὰμ καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ Ἰάκωβος καὶ Ἰωσὴφ καὶ Σίμων καὶ Ἰούδας;
--- Is not his mother called Mary, and his brothers (called) Jacob and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 

3. ἐγὼ πρὸς τὸν πατέρα πορεύομαι[PMI-1S].
 --- I myself am coming to the father. 

4. 3 ὅπου εἰμὶ ἐγὼ ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν (to go).
 --- Where I myself am you(pl.) are not able to go. 

5. ὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος πάλιν ἐπηρώτα (he/she/it began asking) αὐτὸν λέγων (saying)· οὐκ ἀποκρίνῃ[PMI-2S] οὐδέν;
 --- But the Pilate began asking him again saying: "Are you not answering anything?" 

6. Καὶ συνάγονται οἱ ἀπόστολοι πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἀπήγγειλαν (they told) αὐτῷ πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησαν (they did) καὶ ὅσα ἐδίδαξαν (they taught).
 --- And the apostles are being gathered to the Jesus and they told him all (things) which they did and which they taught. 

7. λέγουσιν αὐτῷ· ἐρχόμεθα καὶ ἡμεῖς σὺν σοί.
 --- They are speaking to him: "We are also coming/going with you." 

8. ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀποκρίνεται αὐτοῖς λέγων (saying)· ἐλήλυθεν (he/she/it has come) ἡ ὥρα ἳνα δοξασθῇ (he/she/it might be glorified) ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου.
 --- But the Jesus is answering to them saying: "The hour has come in order that the son of the man might be glorified." 

9. οὐδεὶς γὰρ δύναται ταῦτα τὰ σημεῖα ποιεῖν (to do) ἃ σὺ ποιεῖς, ἐὰν μὴ ᾖ (he/she/it is) ὁ θεὸς μετ᾽ αὐτοῦ.
 --- For no one is able to do these signs which you yourself are doing, if not the God is with him.

10. Καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ Ἰωάννου καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ἔρχονται καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ· διὰ τί οἱ μαθηταὶ Ἰωάννου καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ τῶν Φαρισαίων νηστεύουσιν (they fast), οἱ δὲ σοὶ μαθηταὶ οὐ νηστεύουσιν;
 --- And John's disciples and the Pharisees are coming and speaking to him: "Why John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but the disciples to/with you do not fast?"

11. οἱ πόδες μου πορεύονται πρὸς τὸν τόπον ἐφ᾽ ᾧ ὁ Ἰησοῦς λαλεῖ καὶ οἱ ὀφθαλμοί μου βλέπουσιν τὰ σημεῖα αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ ὦτα6 μου ἀκούει τῶν παραβολῶν αὐτοῦ.
--- My feet are coming to the place on which the Jesus is speaking and my eyes are seeing his signs and my ears are hearing his parables.

12. ἡμέρᾳ καὶ νυκτὶ οἱ ὄχλοι συνάγουσιν περὶ τὸν Ἰησοῦν, οἴδασιν γὰρ ἐκεῖνοι ὅτι ἔρχεται αὐτοῖς λαλεῖν (to speak) τινὰς λόγους τῆς ἐλπίδος καὶ τῆς ζωῆς.
--- By day and by night the crowds are gathering around the Jesus, for those (men) know that he is coming to speak to them some words of the hope and the life.

13. καὶ ἔρχονται οἱ ἄγγελοι εἰς τὸν τόπον ἐκεῖνον καὶ λαλοῦσιν τοὺς λόγους εἰς τὰ ὦτα τοῦ ὄχλου.
--- and the angels are coming into that place and speaking the words into the ears of the crowd.

14. καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ ὁ ἄγγελος κυρίου, Ἁγάρ, ποῦ (where) πορεύῃ;
--- And the angel of the Lord said to her, "Hagar, where are you going?"

15. τέλος λόγου· τὸ πᾶν ἀκούεται[PPI-3S]· τὸν θεὸν φοβοῦ (fear!) καὶ τὰς ἐντολὰς αὐτοῦ φύλασσε (keep!) ὅτι τοῦτο τὸ ὅλον ἔργον τοῦ ἀνθρώπου.
--- end of word: "all the (thing) is heard: 'Fear! the God and keep! his commandments because this is the whole work of the man.' "

16. καὶ εἶπεν Νωεμίν· ἐπιστράφητε (turn back!) … θυγατέρες μου.… τί πορεύεσθε μετ᾽ ἐμοῦ; μὴ ἔτι μοι υἱοὶ ἐν τῇ κοιλίᾳ μου καὶ ἔσονται (they will be) ὑμῖν εἰς ἄνδρας;
--- And Naomi said: "Turn back! ... my daughters. ... Why you are coming with me? Are there still sons in my belly and they will be for you(pl.) into husbands? (Of course not!)"

17. λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς· πιστεύετε ὅτι δύναμαι τοῦτο ποιῆσαι (to do); λέγουσιν αὐτῷ· ναί, κύριε.
--- The Jesus is speaking to them: "Do you believe that I amd able to do this (thing)?"  They are speaking to him: "Yes, Lord!"

18. καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ· ἐκ Ναζαρὲτ δύναταί τι ἀγαθὸν εἶναι (to come);
--- And Nathaniel said to him: "Is something good able to come from Nazareth?"

19. Ἀνέβη (he/she/it went up) δὲ καὶ Ἰωσὴφ ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ἐκ πόλεως Ναζαρὲθ εἰς τὴν Ἰουδαίαν εἰς πόλιν Δαυὶδ ἥτις καλεῖται Βηθλέεμ.
--- But Joseph alswo went up from the Galilee out of the city of Nazareth into the Judah into a city of David which is being called Bethlehem.

20. τί οὗτος οὕτως λαλεῖ; βλασφημεῖ· τίς δύναται ἀφιέναι (to forgive) ἁμαρτίας εἰ μὴ εἷς ὁ θεός;
--- Why this (man) is speaking thus? He is blaspheming; Who is able to forgive sins except one, the God?
