I) Warm-up

α. πάντες πιστεύσουσιν εἰς αὐτόν.
--- All (men) will believe into him.

β. αὐτὸς περὶ ἑαυτοῦ λαλήσει.
--- He himself will speak concerning himself.

γ. συνάξω τοὺς καρπούς μου.
--- I will gather my fruits.

δ. ἕξει τὸ φῶς τῆς ζωῆς.
--- He will have the light of the life.

ε. σὺν ἐμοὶ πορεύσονται.
--- They will come with me.

ζ. βλέψετε καὶ οὐ λαλήσει.
--- You (pl.) will see and he will not speak/

η. ἀκούσει τις … τὴν φωνὴν αὐτοῦ.
--- Someone will hear his voice.

 

II) Translation

1. κύριον τὸν θεόν σου προσκυνήσεις.
--- You (pl.) shall worship Lord, your God.

2. βασιλεὺς Ἰσραήλ ἐστιν, καταβάτω (let him come down!) νῦν ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ (cross) καὶ πιστεύσομεν ἐπ᾽ αὐτόν.
--- He is king of Israel, let him come down! now from the cross and we will believe on him.

3. ἡ γυνή σου Ἐλισάβετ γεννήσει υἱόν σοι καὶ καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἰωάννην.
--- Your wife Elizabeth will give birth to a son for you and you shall call his name John.

4. ὁ δὲ θεός μου πληρώσει πᾶσαν χρείαν (need) ὑμῶν κατὰ τὸ πλοῦτος (riches) αὐτοῦ ἐν δόξῃ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ.
--- But my God will fulfill your(pl.) every need according to his riches in glory in Christ

5. ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ἔρχεται ὥρα καὶ νῦν ἐστιν ὅτε οἱ νεκροὶ ἀκούσουσιν τῆς φωνῆς τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ οἱ ἀκούσαντες (ones who hear it) ζήσουσιν.
--- Truly truly I say to you(pl.) that an hour is coming and it is now when the dead (men) will hear the voice of the son of the God and the ones who hear it will live.

6. καὶ ἔσεσθε μισούμενοι (hated) ὑπὸ πάντων διὰ τὸ ὄνομά μου.
--- And you (pl.) will be hated by all because of my name.

7. ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, ὁ πιστεύων (one who believes) εἰς ἐμὲ τὰ ἔργα ἃ ἐγὼ ποιῶ κἀκεῖνος (that one) ποιήσει καὶ μείζονα τούτων ποιήσει, ὅτι ἐγὼ πρὸς τὸν πατέρα πορεύομαι.
--- Truly truly I say to you(pl.), the one who believes into me --- the works which I do that one will do and he will do greater (things) than these (things), because I myself goes to the father.

8. ὑμεῖς προσκυνεῖτε ὃ οὐκ οἴδατε· ἡμεῖς προσκυνοῦμεν ὃ οἴδαμεν, ὅτι ἡ σωτηρία (salvation) ἐκ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἐστίν. ἀλλὰ ἔρχεται ὥρα καὶ νῦν ἐστιν, ὅτε οἱ ἀληθινοὶ (true) προσκυνηταὶ (worshipers) προσκυνήσουσιν τῷ πατρὶ ἐν πνεύματι καὶ ἀληθείᾳ.
--- You (pl.) yourselves worship what you do not know; we ourselves worship what we know, because the salvation is from the Jews. But an hour is coming and it is now, when the true worshipers will worship to the father in spirit and truth.

9. ζητήσετέ με, καὶ καθὼς εἶπον (I said) τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις ὅτι ὅπου ἐγὼ ὑπάγω (I go) ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν (to go), καὶ ὑμῖν λέγω.
--- You(pl.) will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews that where I myself go you yourselves are not able to go, and I say to you(pl.).

10. ἄκουε (Listen!), Ἰσραήλ, κύριος ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν κύριος εἷς ἐστιν, καὶ ἀγαπήσεις κύριον τὸν θεόν σου ἐξ ὅλης τῆς καρδίας σου καὶ ἐξ ὅλης τῆς ψυχῆς σου καὶ ἐξ ὅλης τῆς διανοίας (mind) σου καὶ ἐξ ὅλης τῆς ἰσχύος (strength) σου.
--- Listen!, Israel, Lord, our God is one, and you shall love Lord, your God from all your heart and from all your soul and from all your mind and from all your strength.

11. τίνι ἡμέρᾳ ἡ μητὴρ καὶ ὁ πατήρ σου πορεύσονται ὧδε ἀπὸ τοῦ οἴκου αὐτῶν παρὰ τῇ θαλάσσῃ; τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ μετὰ τὸ σάββατον.
--- On which day the mother and your father will come here from their house beside the sea? On the third day after the sabbath.

12. προσκυνήσομεν τὸν κύριον τὸν βασιλέα ἡμῶν διὰ τὴν μεγαλὴν ἀγάπην αὐτοῦ ἡμῖν καὶ τὰς ἐπαγγελίας αὐτοῦ τῆς εἰρήνης καὶ τῆς δικαιοσύνης.
--- We will worship the Lord, our king because of his great love for us and his promise of the peace and the righteousness.

13. υἱοὺς καὶ θυγατέρας γεννήσεις καὶ οὐκ ἔσονταί σοι.
--- You will give birth to sons and daughters and they will not be with you.

14. οὐ προσκυνήσεις τοῖς θεοῖς αὐτῶν οὐδὲ ποιήσεις κατὰ τὰ ἔργα αὐτῶν.
--- You shall not worship to their gods nor do according to their works.

15. καὶ εἶπεν κύριος τῷ Ἀβράμ· ἔξελθε (go out!) ἐκ τῆς γῆς σου … καὶ ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ πατρός σου εἰς τὴν γῆν ἣν ἄν σοι δείξω (I will show) καὶ ποιήσω σε εἰς ἔθνος μέγα καὶ εὐλογήσω σε … καὶ ἔσῃ εὐλογητός.
--- And Lord said to Abram: "Go out! from your land ... and from the house of the your father into the land which ever I will show you and I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you ... and you will be blessed."

16. ἔσεσθε οὖν ὑμεῖς τέλειοι ὡς ὁ πατὴρ ὑμῶν ὁ οὐράνιος τέλειός ἐστιν.
--- Now you yourselves shall be complete as your heavenly father is complete.

17. δικαιοσύνη γὰρ θεοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ ἀποκαλύπτεται ἐκ πίστεως εἰς πίστιν, καθὼς γέγραπται (it is written)· ὁ δὲ δίκαιος ἐκ πίστεως ζήσεται.
--- For righteousness of God is revealed in this from faith into faith, just as it is written: "But the righteous shall live from faith."

18. Εὰν ἀγαπᾶτέ με, τὰς ἐντολὰς τὰς ἐμὰς τηρήσετε.
--- If you(pl.) love me, you will keep my commandments.

19. εἴ τις θέλει πρῶτος εἶναι, ἔσται πάντων ἔσχατος.
--- If  someone wishes to be first, he shall be last of all.

20. εὗρον (I have found) Δαυὶδ τὸν τοῦ Ἰεσσαί, ἄνδρα κατὰ τὴν καρδίαν μου, ὃς ποιήσει πάντα τὰ θελήματά μου.
--- I have found David, the (son) of the Jessie, a man according to my heart, who will do all my wills.
