I) Warm-up

α. ἐβάπτιζεν αὐτοὺς.

--- He was baptizing them.

β. δαιμόνια πολλὰ ἐξέβαλλον.

--- I was/They were casting out many demons.

γ. ἐβαπτίζοντο ὑπ᾽ αὐτοῦ.

--- They were being baptized by him.

δ. ἤρχοντο πρὸς αὐτόν.

--- They were coming/going to him.

ε. οὐκ ἐκρινόμεθα.

--- We were not being judged (We were not involved in judging.)

ζ. εἰ γὰρ ἐπιστεύετε Μωϋεῖ, πιστεύσετε ἐμοί.

--- For if you were believing with Moses, you will believe with me.

η. ἐλάλει αὐτοῖς τὸν λόγον.

--- He was speaking to them the word.

 

II) Translation

1. ἐκεῖνος1 δὲ ἔλεγεν περὶ τοῦ ναοῦ (temple) τοῦ σώματος αὐτοῦ.

--- But that man was speaking concerning the temple of his body.

2. καὶ πᾶς ὁ ὄχλος ἤρχετο πρὸς αὐτόν, καὶ ἐδίδασκεν αὐτούς.

--- And the whole crowd was coming to him, and he was teaching them.

3. ἤκουον δὲ ταῦτα πάντα οἱ Φαρισαῖοι.

--- But the Pharisees were hearing all these things.

4. ἦσαν γὰρ πολλοὶ καὶ ἠκολούθουν αὐτῷ.

--- For there were many and they were following with him.

5. ἠγάπα2 δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς τὴν Μάρθαν καὶ τὴν ἀδελφὴν3 αὐτῆς καὶ τὸν Λάζαρον.

--- But the Jesus was loving the Martha and her sister and the Lazarus.

6. καὶ ἐπηρώτα αὐτόν· τί ὄνομά σοι;4 καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ· Λεγιὼν ὄνομά μοι, ὅτι πολλοί ἐσμεν.

--- And he was questioning: "What (is) your name?" And it is saying to him: "Legion (is) my name, because we are many."

7. αὐτὸς γὰρ ἐγίνωσκεν5 τί ἦν ἐν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ.

--- For he himself was knowing what was in the man.

8. ἐπηρώτων αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ τὴν παραβολήν.6

--- The disciples were questioning him his parable.

9. Καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα περιεπάτει ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ· οὐ γὰρ ἤθελεν ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ περιπατεῖν (to walk), ὅτι ἐζήτουν αὐτὸν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἀποκτεῖναι (to kill).

--- And after these things the Jesus was walking in the Galilee; for he was not wishing to walk in the Judea, because the Jews was seeking to kill him.

10. Οἱ7 μὲν οὖν συνελθόντες (when they had come together) ἠρώτων αὐτὸν λέγοντες (saying)· κύριε, εἰ8 ἐν τῷ χρόνῳ τούτῳ ἀποκαθιστάνεις (are you restoring) τὴν βασιλείαν τῷ Ἰσραήλ;

--- Then when they had come together, the ones were asking him, saying: "Lord! if (it is) in this time are you restoring the kingdom for Israel?"

 

III) Additional

11. ὅτε ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἐδίδασκεν ἐπὶ παντὶ τῷ σαββάτῳ, οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ἐπηρώτων τίνι ἐξουσίᾳ ἐκείνους τοὺς λόγους λαλεῖ.

--- When the Jesus was teaching in the synagogues of the Jews on every Sabbath, the Pharisees were questioning by what authority he is saying those words.

12. οἱ ἄνθρωποι οἳ διδάσκουσιν τὸν λόγον τοῦ θεοῦ αὐτοὶ ἐδιδάσκοντο μὴ κηρύσσειν (to preach) ἐν πολλῷ χρόνῳ;

--- Were the men who are teaching the word of the God themselves being taught not to preach in much time?

13. ὁ δὲ οὐκ ἤθελεν,9 εἶπεν δὲ τῇ γυναικὶ τοῦ κυρίου αὐτοῦ· ὁ κύριός μου οὐ γινώσκει10 δι᾽ ἐμὲ οὐδὲν ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ καὶ πάντα ὅσα ἐστὶν αὐτῷ ἔδωκεν (he/she/it has given) εἰς τὰς χεῖράς μου.… τότε πῶς ποιήσω τὸ ῥῆμα11 τὸ πονηρὸν τοῦτο;

--- But the one was not wishing, but he said to the wife of his master: "My master, on account of me, does not know anything in his house, and he has given all things which is to him into my hands. ... Then how will I do this evil thing?"

14. καὶ ἠρώτα αὐτὸν ὁ βασιλεὺς κρυφαίως12 εἰπεῖν (to say) εἰ ἔστιν λόγος παρὰ κυρίου, καὶ εἶπεν· ἔστιν.

--- And the king was questioning him secretly to say if (it) is a word from Lord, and he said: "Yes."

15. καὶ αὐτὴ ἐλάλει ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτῆς … καὶ φωνὴ αὐτῆς οὐκ ἠκούετο.

--- And she was speaking in her heart ... and her voice was not being heard.

16. ἠρώτων αὐτὸν οἱ περὶ αὐτὸν σὺν τοῖς δώδεκα τὰς παραβολάς.

--- The ones around him with the twelve were asking him the parables.

17. ἀληθῶς οὗτος ὁ ἄνθρωπος υἱὸς13 θεοῦ ἦν.

--- Truly this man is a son of God.

18. παραβολαῖς πολλαῖς ἐλάλει αὐτοῖς τὸν λόγον καθὼς ἠδύναντο ἀκούειν (to listen).

--- With many parables he was speaking to them the word just as they were able to listen.

19. Ἀγαπητοί, οὐκ ἐντολὴν καινὴν γράφω ὑμῖν ἀλλ᾽ ἐντολὴν παλαιὰν ἣν εἴχετε14 ἀπ᾽ ἀρχῆς.

--- Beloved ones, not a new commandment I am writing to you but an old commandment which you were having from beginning.

20. ἐδίδασκεν γὰρ τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς ὅτι ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδοται (he/she/it will be betrayed)15 εἰς χεῖρας ἀνθρώπων, καὶ ἀποκτενοῦσιν αὐτόν.

--- For he was teaching his disciples and he was speaking to them that the son of the man will be betrayed into hands of men, and they will kill him.
