I) Warm-up

α. ἦλθεν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν.

--- He came to the Jesus.

β. προσῆλθον αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταί.

--- The disciples came with him.

γ. ἔβαλεν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν γῆν.

--- He threw them into the earth.

δ. πνεῦμα ἅγιον ἐλάβετε;

--- Did you receive holy spirit?

ε. οἱ προφῆται ἀπέθανον.

--- The prophets died.

ζ. εἰσῆλθεν εἰς γῆν Ἰσραήλ.

--- He came into land of Israel.

η. εὗρες γὰρ χάριν παρὰ τῷ θεῷ.

--- For you found grace from the God.

 

II) Translation

1. Χριστὸς ἀπέθανεν ὑπὲρ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν ἡμῶν κατὰ τὰς γραφάς.

--- Christ died on behalf of our sins according to the scriptures.

2. καὶ ἐξῆλθον οἱ μαθηταὶ καὶ ἦλθον εἰς τὴν πόλιν καὶ εὗρον καθὼς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς.

--- And the disciples went out and went into the city and found just as he said to them.

3. καὶ φωνὴ ἐγένετο ἐκ τῶν οὐρανῶν· σὺ εἶ ὁ υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητός.

--- And a voice came out of the heavens: "You yourself are my beloved son."

4. διδάσκαλε, εἴδομέν τινα ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί σου ἐκβάλλοντα (who was casting out) δαιμόνια.

--- Teacher!, we saw some one casting out demons in your name.

5. ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ· τί με λέγεις ἀγαθόν; οὐδεὶς ἀγαθὸς εἰ μὴ εἷς ὁ θεός.

--- But the Jesus said to him: "Why you are calling me holy? No-one (is) holy except one, the God."

6. ἐξῆλθεν καὶ ἀπῆλθεν εἰς ἔρημον (lonely) τόπον κἀκεῖ (and there) προσηύχετο. καὶ εὗρον αὐτὸν καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ ὅτι πάντες ζητοῦσίν σε.

--- He went out and he left into a lonely place and there he prayed. And they found him and they are saying to him that all ones are seeking you.

7. πολλάκις (often) καὶ εἰς πῦρ αὐτὸν ἔβαλεν καὶ εἰς ὕδατα.

--- Often he threw him both into fire and into water.

8. οὔτε οἶδα οὔτε ἐπίσταμαι (I understand) σὺ τί λέγεις. καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἔξω.

--- Neither did I know nor do I understand what you yourself are saying. And he went out side.

9. οἳτινες3 ἀπεθάνομεν4 τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ, πῶς ἔτι ζήσομεν ἐν αὐτῇ;

--- Whoever  (of) us died in sin, how shall we still live in it?

10. ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν· ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, ζητεῖτέ με οὐχ ὅτι εἴδετε σημεῖα, ἀλλ᾽ ὅτι ἐφάγετε (you ate) ἐκ τῶν ἄρτων καὶ ἐχορτάσθητε (you were satisfied).

--- The Jesus answered to them and said: "Truly, truly I am saying to you, you are seeking me not because you saw signs, but because you ate out of the breads and you were satisfied."

 

III) Additional

11. ἐν τῷ οἰκῷ ἐν ᾧ οἱ μαθηταὶ τὸν ἄρτον ἀπὸ τῆς χειρὸς τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἔλαβον, εἶπον σὺν ἀλλήλοις καὶ τῷ κυρίῳ αὐτῶν.

--- In the house in which the disciples received the bread from the hands of the Jesus, they spoke with one another and their lord.

12. οἱ ὄχλοι προσῆλθον τὴν πόλιν καὶ ἐν τῇ συναγώγῃ συνήγαγον ὅτι ὁ Παῦλος ἐδίδασκε τὴν ἀληθείαν περὶ Ἰησοῦ τοῦ Χριστοῦ τε καὶ τοῦ κυρίου.

--- The crowds came to the city and they gathered in the synagogue because the Paul was teaching the truth concerning Jesus, the Christ and also the Lord.

13. καὶ ἀπέθανεν Σαούλ καὶ τρεῖς (three) υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ καὶ πᾶς ὁ οἶκος αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ ἀπέθανεν.

--- And Saul died and his three sons in that day and all his household died on the same (day).

14. εἰσῆλθεν δὲ Νῶε καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἡ γυνὴ αὐτοῦ καὶ αἱ γυναῖκες τῶν υἱῶν αὐτοῦ μετ᾽ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν κιβωτὸν5 διὰ τὸ ὕδωρ.

--- But Noah and his sons and his daughter and his sons' wives entered with him into the ark because of the water.

15. ἐν ἀγάπῃ προσελάβετο6 ἡμᾶς ὁ δεσπότης7· διὰ τὴν ἀγάπην, ἣν ἔσχεν πρὸς ἡμᾶς, τὸ αἷμα8 αὐτοῦ ἔδωκεν (he/she/it gave) ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς ὁ κύριος ἡμῶν ἐν θελήματι θεοῦ, καὶ τὴν9 σάρκα ὑπὲρ τῆς σαρκὸς ἡμῶν καὶ τὴν ψυχὴν ὑπὲρ τῶν ψυχῶν ἡμῶν.

--- In love the host received us; because of the love, which he had to us, Jesus Christ, our Lord gave his blood on behalf of us by God's will, and the body on behalf of our body and the soul on behalf of our souls.

16. Ὁ οὖν Ἰησοῦς … ἦλθεν εἰς Βηθανίαν, ὅπου ἦν Λάζαρος, ὃν ἤγειρεν (he/she/it raised) ἐκ νεκρῶν Ἰησοῦς.

--- Therefore the Jesus came into Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus raised out of death.

17. ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ ἦν, καὶ ὁ κόσμος δι᾽ αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο, καὶ ὁ κόσμος αὐτὸν οὐκ ἔγνω.

--- He was in the world, and the world became through him, and the world did not know him.

18. Μετὰ ταῦτα ἦλθεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν Ἰουδαίαν γῆν καὶ ἐκεῖ διέτριβεν (he/she/it was spending time) μετ᾽ αὐτῶν καὶ ἐβάπτιζεν.

--- After these (things) the Jesus and his disciples came into the Judean land and there he was spending time with them and he was baptizing.

19. πέντε γὰρ ἄνδρας ἔσχες καὶ νῦν ὃν ἔχεις οὐκ ἔστιν σου ἀνήρ.

--- For five men you had and now whom you are having is not your husband.

20. εἶπον [οὖν] αὐτῷ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι· νῦν ἐγνώκαμεν (we know) ὅτι δαιμόνιον ἔχεις. Ἀβραὰμ ἀπέθανεν καὶ οἱ προφῆται, καὶ σὺ λέγεις· ἐάν τις τὸν λόγον μου τηρήσῃ (he/she/it might keep), οὐ μὴ10 γεύσηται11 θανάτου εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.

--- Therefore the Jews said to him: "Now we know that you are having demon. Abraham died and the prophets, and you yourself are saying: 'if someone might keep my word, he will never ever taste death forever.'"
